Will & Grace: The Complete Sixth Season

Sometimes the hardest part of writing a review is that there really isn't that much to say about a given title. On the other hand it's often equally difficult because there is just too much to talk about; such is the case with Will & Grace: The Complete Sixth Season.

There isn't a single show on this four disc 23 episode collection that isn't note worthy for one reason or another. Either it has some amazing guest star, as most of the episodes do, or it's just down right hysterical!

Will & Grace is without a doubt one of my favorite shows, so this review will probably be just as biased as any of my Star Trek reviews, so I ask you to bare with me as I heap huge amounts of praise on this groundbreaking funnier than most sitcoms.

The season picks up from a cliffhanger at sea where Karen (Megan Mullally) has been thrown overboard by her arch enemy Lorraine Finster (Minnie Driver) with her ever faithful maid Rosario (Shelley Morrison) leaping to her rescue. Meanwhile, back on the yacht, Grace (Debra Messing) has discovered a love letter from the gorgeous Dr. Morty addressed to her husband Leo (Harry Connick Jr.) and Jack (Sean Hayes) and Will (Eric McCormack) have woken up nude and hung over in the same bed with no memory of the previous night. And so begins a fantastic stand out season of this eight year long laugh fest!

There are so many amazing things going on here that for the sake of time I won't mention them all, but one thing that has to be mentioned is the ever growing caliber of the guest players on this show. Sometimes this can be a hinderance to a group of actors as they end up being outshined by these huge professionals traipcing in and out every week. Of course, that never happened here; in fact a lot of the guest cast were intimidated being on set opposite these four actors who now after 5 full years had become as smooth as a well oiled machine.

With the likes of Edie Falco and Chloe Sevigny as the dreaded lesbian relators in East Side Story, James Earl Jones as himself in Me and Mr. Jones and even a single line for a yet to be discovered Brandon Routh, now of Superman fame, in A Gay / December Romance this season has so many surprises and peaks that in my mind, it really beats out just about any other season of the show.

Season six also introduces the eventual love of Will's life, the forgetful cop with a heart of gold, Vince, played by the gorgeous Bobby Cannavale and Jack's one long term boyfriend Stuart played by comedian Dave Foley.

Debra Messing's real life pregnancy mid way through the season played a huge part in

the show as she disappeared for a few episodes leaving room for an ever ready and able Megan Mullally to step in for some unusual Will and Karen time that was really great to see. I love Grace and Debra is an amazing actress and the show wouldn't have been the same without her, BUT they also did an amazing job of minimizing the overall effect of her absence.

Now, on to the real question at hand"¦ Will & Grace is literally on TV like 5 times a day in syndication so why would you want to go out and buy these episodes on DVD? The answer is surprisingly simple, there are actually moments and jokes on these episodes that you have never seen before because they had to be edited for time on broadcast television. So not only are you watching these shows in sequence in stead of completely out of order on Lifetime or the CW, but you're getting more footage and some classic never before seen moments. Not to mention, the absolute best reason to pick up this set, the outtakes!

Sometimes watching this group mess up is even funnier than when they get it right. That's why in the final season of the show when they did the live broadcasts it went over so well with the fans. In fact, if I had one bone to pick with the shows creators, aside form pulling the show WAY TOO EARLY, it would be that they didn't do enough of the live shows.

So there you have it folks, short and sweet. I've only ever met one person who didn't like this show and he was British and hated everything, so I feel totally justified in recommending this show, and in particular this season, to anyone out there who wants to laugh and have a good time.

And just so as not to feel guilty, I'm going to mention all the other guest stars that pop up this season to officially add them to the roster of W&G players; Mira Sorvino appears as the one woman Will ever slept with who also happens to be Leo's ex girlfriend, Blythe Danner reprises her role as Will's uber WASP-ie mom Marilyn, Dylan McDermott shows up as the quintesentiual mama's boy who briefly courts Will, the hilarious John Cleese reappears many times as the father of Karen's arch enemy and her eventual fiancé Lyle Finster, Jack Black appears as a cracked out Doctor with recurring nurse Sheila played by Laura Knightlinger, a nurse of a completely different color shows up as the hardened Nurse Carver with Lea DeLaria, yummy Tom Everett Scott is a convienent Leo replacement in Strangers with Candice which also starred recurring guest star Candice Bergen as herself, Barry Manilow has a brief appearance in Fanilow along with Debbie Reynolds as Grace's mom and Sara Gilbert as

the number one Fanilow, former Commander in Chief Geena Davis shows up as Grace's screw up older sister in The Accidental Tsuris, Suzanne Pleshette reappears as Karen's scheming mom, Tracey Ullman plays a cooking teacher with a fake finger in Looking for Mr. Good Enough, fan favorite Eileen Brennan pops up as Jack's former acting teacher Zandra in Flip-Flop Parts 1 and 2, Sharon Osbourne and Bebe Neuwirth show up in No Sex 'n' the City, Jack's adorable son Elliot played by Michael Angarano reappears wanting to be a cheerleader, Lesley Anne Warren also reappears as Will's dad's mistress, the butt of every short joke imaginable Leslie Jordan reappears as Beverly Leslie, and finally a wonderfully loveable Tim Curry as Lyle's brother in the season finale and Jennifer Lopez as the entertainment at the weeding finally round out the entire guest cast for season six!
