South Park: The Complete Fourth Season
After riding the wave of three hit seasons of television and one feature length film, South Park had become more than just a cartoon by season four. It was a soap box for creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone to voice their oftentimes crude social commentary. Though it may not seem like it to most, South Patk was becoming more and more sophisticated and subtle in it's humor as the seasons progressed. Episodes would reference current events as well as spoof pop-culture with a more piercing wit. Season Four also witnessed a new, re-vamped image when the kids move on to fourth grade"¦finally.
Every Thursday, it's a routine tradition for my friends and I to discuss the previous night's South Park. Each episode is so undeniably unique that they soon become known by just a few words. For instance, Season Four contains such memorable gems as "Timmy"Â, "Cherokee Hair Tampons"Â, and "N.A.M.B.L.A."Â"¦(North American Man Boy Love Association). Season Four also experimented with some ideas that may have been creative but didn't quite catch on when they aired. There was the infamous "Pip" episode that mimics Great Expectations"¦South Park style. At first watch, you may wonder what the hell they were thinking when they put this one together, but if you know the Dickens tale you can appreciate it for its cleverness. And how can one forget the return of Sadaam in the two part episode "Do The Handicapped Go To Hell?" and "Probably"Â.
There are seventeen episodes in all on three discs. You can have yourself an entire weekend of "Trapper Keeper" invasions and "Fat Camp" adventures. Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny and the new addition of Timmy headline Season Four"¦but don't think that's all. Mr. Garrison gets pushed down to kindergarten and the boys are now under the tutelage of Mrs. Choksondic. Be sure to check out the mini-commentaries too while you're at it. I really liked the way the commentaries were done on this DVD set. For about the first 5-10 minutes, Matt and Trey offer their own hilarious soundtrack filled with juicy nuggets on the production process and explanations to South Parks's many references.
If you are in the market for any TV to DVD products, I highly recommend you pick up the latest installment in the South Park series. However, as much as I think everyone should watch South Park, there is only a certain audience that is going to buy the DVD sets. With that in mind South Park nuts"¦Season Four contains many classic episodes that you're sure to love. The special features are scant, but that seems to be the only drawback. So, graduate to the fourth grade already. And if you don't like it"¦screw you
