Significant Others: The Complete Series
One of the great things about all of these TV shows making their way to the DVD shelves is that the public is constantly being reintroduced to series that they may have missed, or not even known existed. Take for instance a show like, hmm, Significant Others which aired on the Bravo network. Unless you were a fan of Bravo and kept up with its programming, or were one hell of a channel surfer, you probably wouldn't have seen it. Now, thanks to those universal DVD listings, unfettered by network or studio niches, viewers have the opportunity to check out this hysterically funny, ground breaking show.
The premise is simple: You have four couples; struggling with marriage, relationships, kids, money you name it. They all go to therapy to discuss their issues and try to work it out. Some do, some don't. Beyond the therapy sessions, (which serve as narration for the couples lives) we see them in the outside world deal with each other as they work to solve the conflicts that keep them all butting heads.
It's a straightforward scenario. What they endure as lovers, however is anything but. They've all got something going on, and the great thing is it never bores as we jump cut from couple to couple keeping the comedy fresh and fast paced.
The mood is spontaneous as most of the deliveries are supposedly improved, and I believe it. The actors in this are superb; I believe all of their performances and became totally addicted. I couldn't skip an episode; I had to know what was going to happen to them.
Another plus is there are four couples, but only three per show. The first season threw me off a bit, as mid way through they replaced one of the Caucasian couples with the sole African American couple. My knee jerk reaction was that this was their attempt to diversify the cast, but as it turns out the newbies were a really funny duo that blended almost seamlessly into the established cast.
Significant Others has a touch of Curb Your Enthusiasm to it. It comes off a little like a reality show but of course is all pure fiction. The bottom line, I can't believe that I had never seen this show before and moreover that its been cancelled. It's seriously one of the most underrated shows that I've come across. This would be a great pick up for HBO, so the show could go all out and would be marketed the way it needs to be. Bravo is a lame network in my opinion and never deserved this brilliant comedy, but those are the breaks.
This is something totally original and refreshing with some of the funniest actors out there. It would be a shame for there not
There is also some commentary with the show creators but that's all the extras you will see. Believe me, the twelve episodes are enough.
