Secret Window

According to legendary suspense writer Stephen King, our 'Secret Window’ is a small portion of our mind that reveals who we truly are. Based upon Stephen King’s short story 'Secret Window, Secret Garden,’ this adaptation from book to film, Secret Window delivers a riveting suspense thriller with twists and turns that can only be thought up by the 'psychotic genius’ that is Stephen King. Mort Rainey (Johnny Depp)is a successful writer who has sought seperation from everyday society at his secluded cabin in upstate NY after his marriage fails following his discovery of his wife’s cheating ways. Ironically enough, I have the priveledge of having a secluded family vacation house in Upstate NY myself and can relate to the mind-opening experience one feels when all the pressures of the world seem non-existant. Surrounded by trees and lakes, miles from the nearest town, and no refuge except your own thoughts, the possibility of madness lurks. The madness of distinguishing fantasy from reality.

While attempting to write a new story based upon his marriage ending, Mort is confronted at his cabin by a Mississippi farmer named John Shooter. Accusing Mort of plagarism for his short story 'Secret Window,’ Shooter uses threats of violence and extortion as means of getting even with Mort. Unfortunately, Mort’s claims of foul play go unattended by an aging sheriff and a skeptical private investigator. Shooter refuses to go away without compensation as his methods lead to threatening letters and eventually, murder.

The features on this DVD exceptionally compliment the film itself, including three featurettes which run an hour in succession that include on location shots, actor and director interviews, and plot twists with unexpected turns. A new feature known as Animatics is a 3-D view of specific scenes in animation (looks like something out of Resident Evil on Sony Playstation!). Lets not forget about the deleted scenes including an extended version of the ending. I’ll tell you one thing, you’ll never eat corn the same again!

An exceptional cast ensemble lead by the ageless wonder Johnny Depp as Mort Rainey (how do those cheek bones stay so firm past 40?). Scene stealer John Turturro plays John Shooter (Shoot-her, you know what I’m talking about!), the stunning Maria Bello as Amy, former Oscar winner Timothy Hutton plays wife stealer Ted, and veteran actor Charles S. Dutton plays private investigator Ken Kalsch. Overall, 'Secret Window’ is a riveting suspense thriller that makes you ask yourself what is the difference between fantasy and reality. I believe a person’s Secret Window is the person we truly are but are often afraid to be and only in moments of weakness is that proverbial window opened. A must-rent movie alone, but it’s the additional features that make this DVD a must-buy for any collection. So, what’s your 'Secret
