MacGyver:The Complete Second Season
MacGyver. Mac. Richard Dean Anderson with a match book and a piece of plastic thwarting all danger in the nick of time. And I used to watch this show and think it was good. It was on USA I think along with Quantum Leap (for the record I still like Quantum Leap). This star has a mullet. Come on, if his face wasn't cute no one would like this show at all!
It's ridiculous to me now that I believed this crap. That anyone did. Or was into it. That MacGyver was a popular show with adults amazes me. In one episode the "bookish"Â accountant or something is transferred into a confident beauty just by removing her glasses and putting her hair down. I wish it was that easy. In others he's saving the day with toothpicks, batteries, a piece of string and his trust pocket knife. MacGyver. Mac. Memories, memories.
I wish I could even compliment the acting but in 1886 acting was still over-the-top dramatic. Remember it was the hay day for Dynasty. I didn't even catch this show until it was syndicated. Aside from Richard Dean Anderson and Dana Elcarwho played his immediate boss at the Agency, Pete Thorton, some semi-big names today were guest stars or regulars on MacGyver Season Two, like Bruce McGill, more recently starring in Cinderella Man, and Desperate Housewives Teri Hatcher playing friend who always manages to be in the way, Penny Parker.
But I have to be real; MacGyver just doesn't hold the same appeal as it did when I was younger. Each plot line is so convoluted I got headaches trying to follow them but they all break down the same:
some laughs and giggles interrupted by possible danger "” yes it's danger, dramatic danger, we'll send MacGyver "” oh no, it's going to be tougher than we thought, there is a back story here we just discovered or another plot line that decides to piggy back the first "” can Mac make it? most of the time we can't get in touch with him "” less than a minute left, I need a bobby pin, a chewed piece of gum, and sand, yes, I think that will do it "” 10 seconds "” sigh or relief and smiles cause Mac did it, for a second there we weren't sure "” everything is resolved and all that isn't just disappears into the credits hoping no one notices
That's the MacGyver guide and it gets old really quick. If anything for me this show has kitsch value only. True fans obviously feel differently. But no matter what tape it off TV because this DVD has zero special features, which makes it no where even near the $40 Amazon.com
