Life As We Know It

I’m not sure why this movie didn’t get noticed more while it was in theaters. Even I, who had seen and loved the movie, forgot about it almost as soon as we had posted our review and interviews; which are amazing by the way you should definitely check them out.

But seriously, this is a wonderfully heartfelt movie that dares to be different from the stereotypical romantic comedy and adds a touch of real emotion and genuine sorrow that most films wouldn’t. Yet somehow it still flew way beneath the radar.

Hopefully its life on DVD / Bluray and on cable will be a happier and more productive one.

The story follows Messer and Holly played by the dreamy Josh Duhamel and the always sassy and wonderful Katherine Heigl and what happens to their lives when their mutual best friends Peter and Alison (Hayes MacArthur and Christina Hendricks) are killed in a car accident and custody of their young child Sophie is left to the unsuspecting pair.

Of course there are a lot of fish-out-of-water jokes as they try to teach themselves childcare overnight; Lots of poop jokes and food throwing, things of that nature but much more than that is the overriding sense of family that is created and the drama surrounding the situation which permeates every scene, even the funny ones.

Director Greg Berlanti doesn’t do anything fluffy. All of his past works as director, producer and or writer have had true emotional through lines that help audiences to connect to his characters and to truly feel things for them. I still say his 1999 film The Broken Hearts Club is one of the best gay romantic comedies ever made (maybe even the ONLY one ever made) and he has the same type of success here.

The performances across the board are great but I really have to single out our leads because not only were they great in these roles, but the roles were great for them. In an interview with Josh I told him that, “It’s a really sweet movie that really fits you very well,’ he thanked me and asked, “So you think I’m super sweet?” I giggled and said, “I think you’re Super Sweet!’ to which he responded, “Aww… I think you’re super sweet!” (And a friendship was born)

But the truth is it really was a perfect role for him to play as it played to his acting ability and not just to how hot he is or his ability to talk to robots that aren’t there (Transformers). He literally is the guy that anyone looking to settle down with would want a crack at and this film really highlights that.

For Katherine it mirrored real life in an odd way because at the same time she was playing this role she herself was quietly adopting a baby of her own so it was a

perfect fit in all respects.

The Bluray presentation of the film is beautiful making our gorgeous and funny cast look their very best. The Bluray also has several super fun special features including; A Survival Guide to Instant Parenting which is a featurette with cast and crew interviews talking about the difficulties in becoming an overnight parent (mostly in character which is fun). There’s also a featurette that deals with Katherine Heigl’s real life situation of adopting her first child while at the same time playing a first time mom on film. This feature is so well edited and so heartfelt that, like at the end of the movie itself, it left me with a huge smile on my face. Finally we have Josh Duhamel: The Triplet Tamer where we see how this big hunky man adjusted to playing opposite these three adorable little girls; and it’s true what they say, there is nothing sexier than a guy who is good with kids. If you were a fan of his before seeing this movie, trust me you’ll become an even bigger one after it.

Rounding out the set are some deleted scenes which are great; one of which shows Katherine Heigl’s former Roswell co-star Majandra Delfino as a young, perky one night guest of Messer’s. It was great seeing the two of them share the screen again after so many years.

Hands down this is a great, heartfelt movie with the perfect combination of drama, humor and romance and for anyone whose biological clock might be ticking this movie may have you running to the adoption agency!
