Grey's Anatomy: The Complete First Season
Oh joy, another medical sitcom cause ER, Chicago Hope and Scrubs weren’t enough already. If you can’t detect my sarcasm, it’s there. I never really was fond of any of the medical shows; in fact I’m not really all that fond
of TV shows in general. Most of the time my schedule is too hectic to give
up a weekly time slot for viewing, so I try to steer clear of them.
Well I guess the time slotting problem isn’t really a problem
anymore with most of TV’s most popular titles coming out with seasonal box
sets. That’s how I stumbled upon this one. And yes"¦ my fears were confirmed
because within 24 hours of getting my hands on this 2-disc set I watched all
9 episodes, that’s about 7 hours of being glued to my TV.
The show was surprisingly good. It’s about following the lives
of a group of interns at Seattle Grace Hospital, one of the leading
hospitals in Washington. Now granted I was never an intern at a hospital,
but I’m pretty sure this group of people isn’t the normal mix you would find
in most hospitals.
This is a mix of interns that break all the rules. Dr. Meredith
Grey (Ellen Pompeo) puts her career on the line to save a baby in *Episode 2
"” The First Cut Is The Deepest*. That wasn’t as bad though as Dr. Isobel
“Izzie” Stevens (Katherine Heigl hottie of Roswell fame for those of you not in the know), who treats a woman illegally in a parking
lot in the same episode. This is just scratching the surface of these bold
interns who also talk back to bosses and perform surgeries and even
autopsies without approval.
What really makes the show in all honesty is the great chemistry the cast seems
to have with each other as well as each actor’s connection his or her own
role. T.R. Knight who plays Dr. George O’Malley acts his role perfectly. I
can’t remember the last time I saw a character play the insecure-nervous
role as well as him. Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) is a cocky, smart ass,
male-chauvinist and everyone loves him for it.
Meredith Grey is the soothing voice that takes us through each
episode, after all the show is *Grey’s Anatomy*. (not just a reference to the book after all) She is the daughter of one of the most famous surgeons that once practiced in the hospital. Unfortunately her mom has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and she is left
with the burden on her shoulders, since the condition is a secret to
everyone else. That is the least of her problems though, since she is also
dealing with 100 work-weeks and hiding a taboo relationship with her boss
Dr. McDreamy also known as Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).
The show also has a
appeal. That’s right you guessed it, this is the best looking bunch of
interns to ever grave a hospital. After all Izzie is not only an intern, but
also a lingerie model. That aspect of her life is really brought out
in *Episode 4 "” No Man’s Land *when a patient recognizes Izzie from an ad in a magazine.
Of course the Dr. Meredith Grey and Dr. McDreamy as well as Dr. Cristina
Yang (Sandra Oh) and Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) sex scenes also add some spice to the show for viewers.
The episodes are not totally superficial though. Each episode
opens with Grey introducing a topic for the show and then running with it.
The shows usually sum it all up nicely with a moral to be learned at the
end. Throughout this season some such topics were secrets, juggling
schedules, pregnancy, honesty, and of course morality in general.
*Episode 9 "” Who’s Zoomin’ Who?* was a perfect season finale
cliffhanger. It was humorous while ending with many tensions in place and
questions unanswered. The biggest surprise though comes when a secret past
is revealed in the last minute. Hey, c’mon people did you think I was going
to say what it was? Buy this season and see for yourself, it’ll be money
well spent.
Special Features:
The special features were disappointing at best. There were some
cast commentaries that were somewhat interesting and the pilot episode, but
that’s about it. The deleted scenes were only from 4 episodes even though 9
were in the season. I also felt it was awkward that all the deleted scenes
were only from episodes on disc one, but the deleted scenes were actually on
disc two.
