Cory in the House: All-Star Edition
That's So Raven became one of the Disney Channel's most popular TV sitcoms that turned former child star Raven-Symone into a teen idol. However, a problem was posed for the show's executive producers Marc Warren and Dennis Rinsler as the mostly aging young cast brought the series to an inevitable end, despite its mostly continued success.
However, the two came up with a plan, create a spinoff series centered around the secondary scheming brother character Cory Baxter. The result of such an idea is Cory In The House, of which the All-Star Edition is now available on DVD.
Raven and her friends from That's So Raven are now in college and mother Tanya still in studying law in England (also occurring in the previous series). Meanwhile, Chill Grill owner and chef Victor Baxter (Rondell Sheridan) gets the opportunity of a lifetime when he is asked to become the personal chef of current U.S. President Richard Martinez (John D'Aquino).
Victor soon moves into the White House with his teenage son Cory (Kyle Massey). As his son attends prep school, he befriends airhead Newton "Newt"Â Livingston III (Jason Dolley), the son of a Senator and Chief Justice, and rebellious Meena Paroom (Maiara Walsh), who is the daughter of an ambassador and is unknowingly Cory's love interest.
As Cory gets into all sorts of schemes that usually backfire on him, he also has to contend with President Martinez's troublemaking and spoiled daughter Sophie (Madison Pettis), who often annoys him. This All-Star Edition compilation DVD contains four choice episodes from the hit series.
In the first episode "Never The Dwayne Shall Meet"Â, Cory attempts to get wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock"Â Johnson (who makes a guest appearance here as himself) to be the face of a new exercise machine, while everyone's excitement over The Rock's visit causes Sophie to feel left out. In the second episode "That's So In The House"Â, sister Raven (Raven-Symone, in a guest appearance) shows up from fashion school.
Cory offers her as the choice to design new uniforms for the White House tour guides. However, when she causes trouble with President Martinez after a prophetic vision that turns out to be bogus, it's up to younger brother Cory to bail her out.
On the third episode "Air Force One Too Many"Â, Cory accidentally stumbles onto on Air Force One after he mistakenly gives the deed to Alaska to the prime minister of Russia. And finally, on the fourth episode "Just Desserts"Â, Cory convinces Victor to make Meena's Bahavian dessert, the nakisha, for a White House banquet that turns disastrous after a mix up in the recipe.
While its attempts to connect in continuity to That's So Raven are awkward and unrealistic at best, Cory In The House succeeds better than the average spinoff. This occurs because it thankfully treats the series more as its own distinct
While That's So Raven star Kyle Massey seemed a rather unlikely choice to build a whole show around, he proves himself, as the star, quite skilled due to his more natural comedic talents. While his former That's So Raven co-star Raven-Symone's level of comedic skill often came out as embarrassinglyover-the-top, Massey's everyman character works due to the actor's more subtle use of self-deprecating humor.
While the series takes a page or two from the kid's wish fulfillment fantasy concept of Disney Channel's similar The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody, Cory In The House has a thankfully more subtle approach. It wisely avoids much of the aforementioned series' rather manic, over-the-top, and cartoonish nature in favor of a more nuanced comedic style that feels more genuinely appealing to both children and their parents.
The DVD's picture quality is presented in the 1:33:1 full-screen aspect ratio of the original TV broadcasts, with the sound quality in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. The DVD also comes with a pair of Backstage Disney bonus features.
Both of them are relatively brief featurettes containing mostly behind-the-scenes footage. Raven In The House features interviews with Kyle Massey and guest star Raven-Symone, while Rock In The House features mostly an interview with Madison Pettis, who talks about what it was like working with guest star The Rock.
While Cory In The House is, on the surface, not all that different from other Disney Channel series, it shows that the channel is continuing to improve the appeal of its series to a level that feels genuinely more enjoyable and less patronizing to its young audience. As revealed in the episodes of The All-Star Edition DVD, the series is great fun for children due to its more nuanced approach, Kyle Massey's considerable comic talent, and a great supporting cast.
