With blu-ray being the next step in home entertainment, the film distribution companies are all clamering to re-release their old classics. A nice way to make a few extra bucks, repackaging an old product with slightly revamped features: this applies mainly to movie like Boogie Nights. The change form VHS to DVD was a massive leap forward, but the advance from DVD to blu-ray is a mere step ahead for most movies. Unless you are dealing with films that are already visually stunning, it isn’t going to change the experience of the film. Boogie Nights is altered only in the slightest way by this technological “breakthrough.”

Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg) is a high school dropout who makes his living by working as a dishwasher at a night club, as well as exposing himself and masturbating in front of people for a fee. When porn director Jack Homer (Burt Reynolds) discovers Eddie, as well as his phallic endowments, Eddie joins the world of porn and dawns the stage name Dirk Diggler. He instantly becomes a star and we watch as he grows from a modesty, and somewhat shy individual, into porn sensation. As Dirk treks deeper and deeper into the shady world of pornography, he begins to change along with the people around him and the industry.

Loosely based on several true events that occurred during the golden age of porn, the most prominent is that of Jon Homes, who Dirk’s character shares many parallels. Despite being the main focus of the film, Dirk doesn’t carry the entire film alone. There is also a strong emphasize on the other members of the porn industry in the film. Amber Waves (Julianne Moore) is drug addicted porn star who has a lackluster fight for the right to see her child; Rollergirl (Heather Graham) struggles with an identity crisis; Scotty J. (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a closet homosexual; Bill Thomson (William H. Macy) struggles with marital problems, and his cheating wife; and the list goes on. Though it is a lot to take in, these characters’ stories are clever woven into one another.

The special features on the blu-ray are disappointing for a film that delivered in such a way. The film runs about two-and-a-half hours and brings forth extraordinary acting, and a superb screenplay: One would assume that a film of this caliber, that received such acclaim in its time, would be stocked with special features. Well this one only brings you deleted and extended scenes. There is commentary that is misleadingly labeled “Behind the Story,” making it seem like it is a behind the scenes feature; and “Additional Footage,” which is kept separated from the deleted scenes section even though it’s ultimately the same thing. Yes, there is a music video, but that is almost as inconsequential as a trailer.

Unless you count

winning “Best Villian” for Fear at the MTV Movie Awards, Boogie Nights is the first of many films starring Mark Wahlberg to receive acclaim. Not only launching the careers of Wahlberg and Graham, Boogie Nights also won several Academy Awards. The movie seems to have everything from quality acting, screen writing, and directing; to a range of emotions from laughing to crying, and everything in between. Even though the film is a work of art, this doesn’t change the fact that the high definition aspect is almost lost on a film like this. It does look nicer, but repurchasing it if you own the DVD would be a foolish move.
