September starts off fast with several titles that were only in theaters just a few months ago.
The latest romantic flick from Katherine Heigl, Killers, failed to make a killing at the box office. The movie was such a dud that it releases this week on DVD and Blu-Ray, only three months after premiering in theaters. The movie is a comical version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but the word ‘comical’ is used lightly. Fans of fluff movies (or movie fans who are utterly bored) will want to give it a rent.
MacGruber, the latest box-office disappointment from Saturday Night Live vets, also meets an eager release date on video this week, hitting home video shelves just three and a half months after it premiered. The movie only had a budget of $10 Million, and failed to make that back before exiting the box office.
Also releasing this week is Michael Douglas’ latest, Solitary Man. The movie stars Douglas as a businessman who’s home life becomes a wreck due to his ever increasing business habits. It’s always a pleasure to see Douglas return to the mainstream, but Solitary Man serves up little in terms of entertainment. Fans of the actor will have to wait until October for his long awaited return to the role of Gordon Gekko to see the actor really impress when Wall Street 2 releases.
Releasing for the first time on Blu-Ray this week are several films just in time for Halloween, including Mars Attacks and Hatchet. Mars Attacks is one of Tim Burton’s best (and oddest) works, while Hatchet is low budget horror (and lots of fun for cheesy, popcorn nights).

The Rest

Mars Attacks
This quirky science fiction comedy is a characteristic feature by iconoclastic director Tim Burton, known to moviegoers for Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. The storyline affectionately harkens back to the deadpan sincerity of such ’50s and ’60s science-fiction films as The Day the Earth Stood Still and War of the Worlds. Flying saucers have been reliably seen over the capitals of the world, and the whole world awaits with bated breath to see what will transpire. Among those waiting is the President of the United States (Jack Nicholson), who is assured by his science advisor (Pierce Brosnan) that the coming aliens are utterly peaceful. This advice is hotly contested (Read Full Synopsis)

Hatchet
A handful of college students looking for a good time are thrown into a world of danger in this homage to the slasher film cycle of the 1970s and ’80s. Ben (Joel David Moore) has just been given his walking papers by his girlfriend and is deeply depressed. Needing a pick-me-up, Ben and his friend Marcus (Deon Richmond) head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and take in a “Haunted Swamp Tour,” with master of ceremonies Shawn (Parry Shen) guiding guests through a spooky patch of bayou country. Along the way, Ben and Marcus meet a pair of half-bright exotic dancers, Misty (Mercedes McNab) and Jenna (Joleigh Fioreavanti), as well as Marybeth (Tamara Feldman), a pretty girl who is secretive (Read Full Synopsis)
